If you have never done gardening before, then it can be a little tricky. Often your planted seeds do not germinate and many of your plants die because of lack of care. To help you get started with indoor gardening successfully, here we have some indoor gardening tips for beginners.
Select the Right Plants as Per your Space
Often beginners end up choosing the wrong variety of plant to grow in a limited space. If you are growing indoors, you need to analyze the condition of your gardening space. If your plants will get ample sunlight, you can go in for sunlight loving plants which need direct light. If your space does not get much sunlight, you should choose plants that can grow in cooler conditions with indirect light. Such plants can be lettuce, herbs, spinach, microgreens or bok choy.
Before Planting get to Know what your Plants Like
Each seedling comes with a tag of growing instructions if you are buying from a nursery. Get information about what kind of soil, how much water and sunlight your plants like. Each plant needs sunlight, soil and water to grow, but in different quantities. Find out which plants would grow best in your indoor conditions.
Do not Over Water or Under Water your Plants
You should also analyze how much water to give to your plants. Some plants may require more, while some need less. So, its better to know exactly how much to water your plants. Plants like cacti should only be watered weekly once. If you over water them, they may die. Some plants need watering at the bottom, so that they can absorb water slowly. Some plants need water every day. Some plants need water every alternate days. You need to study the soil moisture and adjust your watering. Some plants like orchids like a lot of humidity, but may not thrive well if doused in water. You can place a few ice cubes in your orchid pot every week. It is also a good idea to mist them regularly.
Do not Over Use or Under Use Fertilizers
Fertilizers are important for plants, but only in the required quantities. When growing plants indoors, you need to use a fertilizer regularly because these get quickly depleted from the soil. When grown outdoors, plants absorb various nutrients through their roots in a larger soil area. You get different types of fertilizers for plants, in liquid form, pellets, and slow-release. It is better to under-fertilize than over-fertilize your plants. You should know how much fertilizer your chosen plant would need before your plant them indoors.
Figure Out the Sunlight Requirement for your Plant
You need to analyze how much sunlight your chosen plant would need. Different indoor plants need different sunlight quantities. Some need a lot, while some grow well in indirect sunlight too. For plants needing direct sunlight, they should be planted in your balcony, where you get plenty of sunlight. Those needing moderate sunlight, should be given at least 4 hours of sunlight every day. Plants needing indirect sunlight should be placed a few feet away from a window all the time.
